Developing Book Dummies Series – Session 3 Recap

During the final session of the SCBWI Southern Breeze Developing Book Dummies Series on March 13, 2021, our guest Rob McClurkan shared a valuable review of 8 book dummies created during our 3-month series. Rob is an Atlanta based illustrator of Sloth to the Rescue, Captain Marvel: Beware the Flerken!, and Super Rooster Saves the Day. You can learn more about Rob’s work at

As he reviewed the book dummies, Rob provided tips that the whole group can keep in mind as they continue through the process. Key takeaways were:

–Have someone read your work aloud so you can hear where there are holes in the story

—Show what you don’t say; Say what you don’t show. Let the visuals inform the reader

–Add layers to your story to make the visual storytelling interesting

–Create color thumbnails to understand the impact of tone and mood

–Traditional artists may benefit from learning basic digital skills

–Stay open to critique of your work. It is an opportunity to help you grow as an artist

The past three months went by quickly, but we hope everyone learned new skills during this process. If participants missed any session, they can view all of the recordings until April 15th, 2021.

Additionally, a bonus Peer Review session will be held on Sunday, March 28th from 1pm – 2:30 pm. Participants of this series, as well as Critique Fest participants with completed book dummies, will be able to share their stories and get feedback on how to make their work even better. A link will be sent to join the bonus Peer Review session.

It has been a pleasure to host David SanAngelo, Ebony Glenn and Rob McClurkan in this craft development series. Each of them brought valuable tools that author-illustrators need to move their visual storytelling to the next level. We are grateful to have them as a part of the SCBWI Southern Breeze region.

We look forward to seeing you at the Illustration Masterclass on April 24th with our guests Kyle T. Webster and Jessica Saint Jean. Until then, keep creating those great books for kids to read.
