Faculty Spotlight: Winsome Bingham

Welcome to our series of blog posts spotlighting faculty at our 2023 Spring Mingle Conference.

We’ll start with our morning Keynote speaker and breakout session faculty, Winsome Bingham.

Bingham is an acquisitions editor at Reycraft Books as well as an acclaimed author. Her debut picture book Soul Food Sunday (Abrams) sold at auction and was selected as one of the New York Times’ best children’s books of 2021 and received starred reviews from Publisher’s Weekly and Booklist.

Soul Food Sunday came from her own family experiences around meals and family gatherings. Readers get to experience a young boy learning from his grandma how to cook all the family favorites. Bingham describes the importance of food in bringing people together in an interview with Publisher’s Weekly. “We’re so different,” she says, “but we all have this connection of cooking together, talking trash, and eating. Even though the food in this book, the mac and cheese, the collard greens, may be specific to our culture, every culture has food that feeds their soul as well.”

At Spring Mingle, Winsome Bingham will be presenting a breakout session titled BAIT AND TACKLE: How To Bait Your Reader And Tackle The Structure of Your Story. This will be a hands-on work session where we focus on first line, first spreads, and hooking your reader. There are two sessions offered for this talk. She’ll also be participating in the quickfire portfolio panel for illustrators.

Her Keynote is titled The Power in Stories, and is sure to be inspiring! You won’t want to miss it.

Registration for Spring Mingle is open until March 15th. We hope to see you there!
