Welcome to our series of blog posts spotlighting faculty at our 2023 Spring Mingle Conference. This post features our afternoon Keynote speaker and breakout session faculty, Victoria Ying.
Ying’s website bio is impressive! She is a critically acclaimed author and artist living in Los Angeles. She started her career in the arts by falling in love with comic books, this eventually turned into a career working in animation and graphic novels. Her film credits include Tangled, Wreck it Ralph, Frozen, Paperman, Big Hero 6, and Moana. She is the author and illustrator of her own series “City of Secrets and City of Illusion” through Penguin/Viking and the illustrator of the DC series “Diana Princess of the Amazons.” Her upcoming graphic novel projects include her YA debut, “Hungry Ghost” and the Marvel/Scholastic “Shang-Chi and the Secret of Immortality.”
In this blog interview, Victoria gives the following advice to illustrators: “Everyone started out knowing how to draw and paint. We all get bogged down by expectation and what we think art should look like that we get scared off. Don’t be afraid and let yourself be bad at it! You’ll only get better and that’s the only way to become a professional!”
At Spring Mingle, Victoria Ying will be presenting three breakout sessions: Scripting a Graphic Novel: How to start writing for a visual medium, Graphic Novel Illustration time management: How to make sure you can hit your deadlines using every sneaky trick in the book, and Multi Stream income from a multidisciplinary artist and writer. She’ll also be a part of the quickfire portfolio review for illustrators.
Her Keynote is titled The Truth in the Lie: How fiction can reveal honesty and speak to an emotional truth. You won’t want to miss it.
Registration for Spring Mingle is open until March 15th. We hope to see you there!
